HR Update Your Interview Process
I am looking for a part-time role (*cough cough* hire me) and am being reminded daily why people dread the job search.
My background is in Human Resources (HR). I’ve held roles as an Administrator, Coordinator, Generalist, Specialist and HR Business Partner. Anytime I was in a role that touched recruiting/onboarding, I would end up working overtime to update the processes, software and policies associated. The process of hiring new talent should not be one sided and as I emphasize in all of my work, is a relationship that should prioritize trust, safety and respect.
I’m going to use my most recent experience as an example.
I applied for a part-time HR Administrator Role (Onsite in Dallas)-4/6
Phone screening with the person currently in the role-4/11
Video Interview w/ HR Director-4/24
I’m told next steps are multiple assessments and in-person interview
I rescind my candidacy in the interview-4/24
I could tell when I rescinded my candidacy the HR Director was upset but I know it was because we both knew they missed out on a great candidate.
More than a month long process to fill a part-time onsite HR role is extremely telling of how the department is ran and what it would be like working there.
It tells me that this role, while urgently needed, was still not prioritized
It tells me the HR Director lacks trust in themselves and the team
It tells me that this role would include a lot of waiting
The additional steps requested after already speaking with the HR Director could have been consolidated within previous steps or not included altogether. More than 2 interviews for role with no leadership responsibilities is wild. The length of the process does not prioritize trust, safety or respect at the very beginning of this new relationship.
Update your processes or lose out on top talent. 🤠
